"Just say NO to Drugs" Mom!

These were the words that Andrew kept saying to me over and over again.

One of my goals this year with this blog was to make sure and post a new post everyday. Well, I have more than kept up with my goal sometimes exceeding 4 posts a day. I have a lot on my mind and I love to write. Towards the end of last year I was blessed with a blogging opportunity at The Mom Blog. It has inspired me to want to write more and has become one of the best jobs I have ever had. When I was little I always wanted to be a journalist (the kind with the black "press" jacket on reporting while bombs are exploding in the background) and I am planning on going back to school in the fall to take some writing classes. Hopefully to improve my grammar and spelling skills.

We started off the New Year here on this blog with our Lean Cuisine/Skinny Cow 31 days Challenge. It has been super fun, I am loosing weight and getting healthy. Since starting the campaign it seems like the UPS/Fed-ex trucks have been coming everyday delivering new products that companies have been wanting us to do for reviews. We love doing product reviews because they are helping me become a better writer. We have a new one scheduled for everyday until the end of the month!

In one of the UPS packages that I got last week there was a set of supplements. I only post product reviews about products I have actually used and tried. I never just post a picture with a blurb from the companies website.

I attempted to start taking these supplements and within about three hours I started getting violently ill. I got a massive headache and thought I was coming down with the flu. Later that evening I was getting some water when Steve pointed out that my hands were looking funny.

As the evening went on my entire hand started to turn blue. We finished up our nightly vlog for Lean Cuisine and then we rushed over to the ER. They ran a bunch of tests and found that my hormones were completely off and they told me that I had to be open to the fact that this supplement could of caused my body to develop a serious disease called Raynaud's Syndrome. I was shocked and freaked out that taking one pill, one day could cause my body to go into such a state of shock that I would develop this frightening disease??

The next day the symptoms started to get worse. The discoloring had passed to my feet. I was cold and weak. I went back to my regular doctor who I had had not to see since 2004 since I am a pretty healthy woman. They were shocked to see the condition of my hands and even invited other doctors to come in and see me because it is a condition that they had only read about in medical school.

I was pretty depressed last week and exhausted thinking that I would have to live like this for the rest of my life. As exhausted as I was I still continued to meet all my deadlines and complete all my assignments. I found myself typing with gloves on with Steve rubbing my arms to help the circulation so I could type.

The next night Steve was really worried about the way I looked. I had not eaten anything in almost 24 hours and my entire body looked blue. (almost like a corpse) We went back to the ER again and they told me that my system was still in shock.

I had blood tests upon blood tests almost everyday last week. Finally a break through happened. My doctor gave me a medication that he thought would open up my blood vessels and improve the blood flow in my body. I took the pill which ended up making me feel worse....but it helped!

Then within a couple of days the coloration started coming back to my hands and feet. I started to feel warmth again and slowly my energy has been coming back. The medication was finally starting to leave my system.

Today I am completely better. I did not end up developing Raynaud's Syndrome, it was just part of the reaction to this supplement.

When we looked back at the "energy supplement" that I had taken my doctor pointed out to me that it was full of some very powerful herbs and hormones. He told me that it could seriously affect any woman.

When I attempted to contact the company I surprisingly got absolutely no response.

In the future we will never do any product reviews on supplements, energy pills or any types of medications here. I learned my lesson the hard way, but I am glad that I actually tried the pills before I posted any information about it on my blog.

Whenever you consider taking any supplements or energy enhancers make sure and have your doctor thoroughly review the ingredients before you do. Some of the natural medications can have herbs and natural ingredients that can be more powerful than drugs.

So as Andrew told me "Mom, you are supposed to say NO to drugs." I have more than learned my lesson.

  1. Wow! I'm never one to take supplements, especially since I'm lactating... but I've never been a supplements kind of person. What a lesson to learn the hard way! I am so happy to hear that you are on the mend though. Definitely a scary experience! You and your family have been through entirely too much over the last month. Take care of yourselves! :)
