PCRF Cinco de Mayo Half Marathon - Sunday May 1st

I am so excited to attend the Pediatric Cancer Research Cinco de Mayo half marathon this weekend. This is their 13th annual race to help raise funds for pediatric cancer research. There is going to be a 10K, 5K, 1K Kids’ Fun Run and Bike Tour event at the Irvine Spectrum, CA on May 1, 2011.

Highlights of the expo include food, goodies and free giveaways. The OC Family Kids’ Fun Zone features a petting zoo, rock climbing wall, video game truck, bounce houses galore, face painting, train rides, and much more! The adults can stop by the beer garden for a cold beverage after the race. Attendees enjoy the live entertainment featuring local bands, mariachis, deejay, dancers, and local pro sports mascots. PCRF’s Cinco de Mayo fiesta is one of the OC’s favorite weekend family events!

Did I mention that Tenley and Kiptyn from the Bachelor are going to be there? They have volunteered their time to come out and be the honorary starters of the race. They are involved through a Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation Charity Partner, the Cancer Angels of San Diego. I love to hear about celebrities that are passionate about getting involved in charities that help children.

There is still time to register to run!

I hope to see all of you at this great event this weekend.

Help End Child Hunger in America #childhungerendshere #Walmart

Hunger is a reality in America, one that more children face every day. Food is their chance for a better tomorrow and a strong foundation for the future

•Children who are hungry may experience slower growth and inhibited brain development.
•Children who are hungry may suffer from more stomach aches, headaches, colds, ear infections, and fatigue.
•During the school year, about 20.5 million children depend on free or reduced-price school meals to help keep them from going hungry.
•Children who are hungry may not perform well academically
•Research indicates that even mild under-nutrition experienced by young children during critical periods of growth impacts their behavior, school performance, and cognitive development.

How you can help:

1. Go to Walmart and purchase specially marked Conagra foods

2. Enter the code on the Child Hunger Ends Here website

3. You have then helped to feed a child in America

Thank you for helping!

Disney Prom Opens Tomorrow April 29th

Disney Prom opens in theatres tomorrow, April 29th. It is the perfect movie for young teens to go and get excited about their high school prom.

I will never forget my prom. I went with Steve (now my husband). We had to go to two prom's because we went to different schools in Orange County. Prom was such a magical night and seeing this movie made me want to go back 16 years to that magical night we had together.

I took Ella to go see the movie and she loved it. After I had wished Steve and I had gone together. It was a perfect date night and we could of laughed together and reminisced about our prom night.

Here is what Ella thought of the movie:

Review: The Happy Handle Bar Shopping Cart Cover

I love doing product reviews! I love trying out new products and working with brands to help them improve and promote their products.

I have always wanted one of those cool shopping cart covers to have when I take the kids grocery shopping. I would always walk around the store and panic everytime they would chew on the handle bar of the shopping cart. I wish I had committed to getting one when the kids were younger, however I was more than excited to get my first one to do a review with last month.

I headed out to the store the first day I got it, super excited to go shopping knowing that Tyler would not get any germs. The cover was great! It has a hard plastic mold that is covered with the fabric to snap right on the handle bar. There are also pockets for your wallet or snacks for your child while shopping.

When I went to put Tyler into the shopping cart - he was too big. I was trying every angle to try and get him to fit into the cart, even asking the employee to try and help me fit his little legs into the seat. At first I cryed - when did my baby grow-up so much that he is too big to fit into a shopping cart seat? Then I cryed because I had no idea how I would be able to review this awesome shopping cart cover?

Steve and I sat around and brainstromed how we could do the review. Then I noticed that my friend who is just launching her first blog was looking for a shopping cart cover! Plus her baby is still a baby and she could get a lot of use out of the cover. So I gave her the shopping cart cover and she more than rocked her first product review! Make sure and stop by and check out her first product review and to see how awesome the happy handle bar shopping cart cover is!

If you are looking for a high quality shopping cart cover visit the Happy Handle Bars website!

Please help support A Mile For Maddie

Maddie James
Dear Readers,

I hope this email finds you well. On Saturday, May 14th I will be participating in A Mile for Maddie, a 1.2 mile fundraising walk to benefit The Maddie James Foundation. I have joined a team for this event and I would be grateful if you would consider supporting my fundraising efforts by joining my team or making a donation.

You may have heard about Maddie James from Dana Point. Maddie was a five-year old kindergartner who was diagnosed with a malignant and inoperable DIPG brain tumor in January. She passed away March 13th.

The Ocean Institute in Dana Point was one of Maddie's favorite places to visit. The Maddie James Foundation is dedicated to raising $1M to complete the Ocean Institute’s capital campaign to build a $4M educational center for K-12 students. With your help, this dynamic facility will be named The Maddie James Seaside Learning Center.

Here is a link to a powerful video about the James Family, The Maddie James Foundation and The Maddie James Seaside Learning Center: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=posgozyXk2E

Please consider supporting me by joining our team, Team OC Family, or by making a donation in my name. If you join our team, please identify the Team Captain as Suzanne Broughton at Step 2 of the Registration page. Blog for Good: P&G Future Friendly Challenge #shespeaks

Future Friendly is P&G's multi-brand conservation education program aimed at helping consumers like you save energy, save water and reduce waste by focusing on simple, tangible actions you can take in your home. The program is designed to provide practical conservation advice and branded products featuring clear benefits in water savings, energy savings and waste reduction.

You can see how we are working to become a future friendly family:

The tale of two headless statues

When Andrew was born we were given this sweet statue of a Father and Mother holding their baby. I loved it and always displayed it in my home next to a picture of Andrew. Being a new Mom I did not realize the importance of keeping everything out of toddler reach. It was not long before Andrew dropped it off the shelf and broke the head off the daddy.

Steve was so upset that he carefully glued his wooden head back on and told me to always keep it out of reach and on a high shelf.

Then when Tyler was born I got a matching wooden statue of a pregnant lady. Not being a new mom anymore I made sure and always kept it on a high shelf.

The high shelf was no match for a flying Dora the Explorer doll. Who knew Dora could fly?

Two statues celebrating my boys births - both beheaded by each of my boys.

Easter Eggstravaganza Celebration

After the jog-a-thon we headed to celebrate Good Friday with my friend and awesome new blogger Adrianne and her adorable children. The kids were excited to attend their first egg hunt of the year and the Easter Eggstravaganza had over 16,000 eggs at this local church event.

Tyler and his buddy Matthew

a sea of eggs

After the egg hunt all the parents came rushing onto the field to help their kids look for eggs.

Yes! All my kids came away crying because they were not successful in getting an egg.

All the tears were made up for when we ran into their favorite Christian music singer Rob Biagi.

Ella and Tyler ended the event with a yummy cotton candy.

Happy Easter!

Jog-a-thon!

The kids had such a great time at their jog-a-thon this week! Ella and Andrew both raised money for the PTA last month in preparation for the jog-a-thon.

Tyler was a volunteer and helped mark the kids back to show how many laps they made

There was a huge amount of kids running and they ran for 20 minutes!

Making Resurrection Biscuits

Yesterday I spent the day at Tyler's preschool! Being a retired teacher I loved spending the day in the classroom with the children. His teacher did a fun counting game with the children and we made resurrection biscuits with the children. I spent most of the day reading in the book center with the kids and putting on a puppet show with them.

You can see my post in 2009 when I made resurrection biscuits with the kids here:

His teacher did this super fun game with the kids. She laminated some pictures of yellow chicks and wrote numbers on them

Then she had the kids each count out the number of cotton balls to match the number on their chicks

Then we made resurrection biscuits with the kids. You can get the recipe to make them here.

The Marshmallows represents Jesus

Then we seal him in the tomb

Then cook them. While cooking the marshmallow will melt symbolizing that Jesus has risen! Ms. Debbie did a great job telling the kids about the biscuits. She is such a wonderful preschool teacher.

Dreamworks New Movie - The Help

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, “The Help” stars Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer. Three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

THE HELP opens in theaters everywhere on August 12th.

Wordless Wednesday: How about a kiss?

My parents newest bulldog Hermione

Our Friday the 13th Wedding Anniversary

Yesterday my husband Steve and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary. Honestly saying that we have been married for 13 years makes me feel so old - especially when I think that we have been a couple of 20 years. Steve and I first met when I was only 15 years old. We first met at the McDonald's at South Coast Plaza (hence where my email address came from).

Before we had children we would have the most romantic anniversaries. We would go dine at a romantic restaurant or have a lovely meal at home by candle light. Now that we have three kids the way we celebrate has changed so much. Our 13th wedding anniversary was more like Friday the 13th.

We were planning to attend a pre-screening of African Cats in Burbank last night with the kids. It was the perfect opportunity to have a fun dinner in LA followed by a quiet evening in the theatre.

For the first time I attempted to take a nap with Tyler so I would not have any dark circles be all rested for our exciting night. During that hour I got woken up by the UPS driver, the FedEx driver, one of Andrew's friends who needed to see Andrew's vocabulary words and a neighbor who had to complain that our porch light that we have had for three years was now just a too bright for her to sleep at night.

With no nap we headed out for our family night on the town!

After about an hour on the parking lot freeway filled with complaining children, flying goldfish and a flying sippy cup slapped up the side of Steve's head. We decided it was not worth the three hour drive. We headed into Steve's favorite restaurant The Cheesecake Factory. We were seated right away and the evening already seemed promising to be a fantastic dinner.

The dinner was filled with arguing kids over who was taking the most bread, Tyler spilling his food all over me,  and Andrew crying from his chest pains because he snuck a piece of Ella's chicken. It was so romantic that I found myself wanting to run away and hide. Actually I did try and run away - but the kids were right behind me on my dash to hide in the bathroom stall. So I spent my five minutes of quiet that I so despartely needed in the bathroom listening to one of my kids reminding me about everything he needed for his field trip the next day.

We both went to bed with a headache laughing about how it was possible for some many things to go wrong in one night. Steve and I decided that there is no point in celebrating our anniversary again until the kids have grown and are off to college. Next year we will celebrate at Chuck E Cheese where the kids can run and play while we enjoy a romantic dinner over sugary pizza and dance with a singing mouse.

Unique Orange County Gem - Nieuport 17 Restaurant

Last week Orange County Blogcrush members were invited to enjoy dinner at Nieuport 17 in Tustin. I had never been to Nieuport 17 before, however I was immediately impressed with the look and feel of the restaurant when I walked in. There were pictures of planes covering the walls, unique chandeliers and the most romantic furniture and ambiance. This restaurant is a aviator lovers dream dining experience!

Why is the restaurant named Nieuport 17? It is named after the Nieuport 17 early French hi-wing single seat fighter plane in which many allied flyers became aces. It was flown by American volunteers of the celebrated Lafayette Escadrille prior to America's entry into WWI.

Nieuport 17 was founded by formla naval aviator Bill Bettis who opened the original location with only $11.

He has a love for aviation and has one of the finest collection of aviation artifacts, photos and painting within his restaurant. Many famous aviators have enjoyed Nieuport 17 including  R.G. Smith, Gen. Curtis LeMay, the Blue Angels, The Thunderbirds, Flying Tigers, Gen. Jimmy Doolittle, Gen. Adolf Galland, Eddie Martin, Gunther Rall, Sahuro Sakai, Frank Tallman, Bob Hoover, and other aces and test pilots covering almost the full spectrum of aviation.

Priscilla Willis & I enjoying the live entertainment

Come enioy a wonderful evening of delicious steak, seafood and cocktails with live entertainment in the bar!
