From Pumpkin to Jack-o-Lantern

After Tyler's Birthday party, the fun started with Pumpkin Carving together as a family. I love watching my husband bond with our children, as they create fun jack-o-lanterns together. It is something that they look forward to doing with each other every year. This was the first year that Andrew designed and carved a pumpkin all on his own.

Ella was as delicate as a flower, as she carefully took out each seed one at a time.

Then we ended the night, by lighting our pumpkin in the dark sky. It glowed through the night in preparation for the big night where it will welcome all our trick-or-treaters.

Happy Halloween!

Mission Viejo Red Ribbon Week Walk Against Drugs

Drugs is a serious problem in our schools today. My neighbor's high student had three friends last year who died of drug over doses. Starting awareness with your children at a young age, will help them to make better choices as they get older. This week is red ribbon week in the city of Mission Viejo, and hundreds of children walked the streets to help raise awareness of living a drug free life.

My children's new school Oxford Preparatory Academy was a main sponsor of the walk, with the Oxford cheer squad at the front of the walk.

Over the past 20 years Orange County has been providing Red Ribbon wristbands to every school-aged child in the public and private schools as well as many businesses and government agencies.  This is an astounding 1,000,000 Red Ribbon wristbands annually.

Following the walk, vendors and police services gathered for a community fair. Children had an opportunity to learn about the benefits of living a drug free lifestyle. It was a great way to encourage children to want to win the fight for a drug free life.

There are many companies throughout Orange County that support Red Ribbon Week. Your children can show their red wristband at various places and get special discounts. You can read more details on these specials at my article on the OC Mom's site.

New Disney Movie Coming! The Secret World of Arrietty

The Secret World of Arrietty is based on Mary Norton's acclaimed children's book series, The Borrowers.

The Secret World Of Arrietty will be in theaters on February 17th, 2012.

Flash Back at The OC Blogger Bash #OCBloggerBash

Hundreds of Southern California bloggers came together for a night of fun, frolics and fancy dresses. The blogger bash had a 1960's mad men style, prompting many bloggers to hunt down the best vintage dresses.

There was food...oh was there food!  There were prizes (ummm $60,000 worth of prizes) which you would of thought I would of won something, but I never win raffles. There were photo booths, old cars, and rockin' music.

Then there was dancing!

Did I mention there was food? Oh yeah! Try PB & J milk shakes!

and amazing treats...

There was even the cool photo booth hosted by Photo Booth Pro, where bloggers could pose in front of their favorite Orange County landmark. After taking my photos with a group of bloggers, I looked up and saw my long time friend working the booth!

My friend Deb and I

Fashion..Plenty of 1960's fashion!

The evening was ended with an elegant fashion show featuring all the hot dresses from Queen of Heartz in Anaheim. I fell in love with the teal dress, and can't wait to head over to Queen of Heartz and purchase it!

Happy 50th Anniversary Anaheim Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau and thank you for a fun night!

Forever Loving Peets Coffee #PeetsCoffee

Since making the switch to Peet's I am forever a lover of this brand. I freshly brew my favorite Peet's coffee flavor every morning when I get up, and it helps to start my day off right. The flavor is just as fresh and bold as its aroma.

My husband recently started bringing Peet's into his office, and his sales have already started rising. The only thing that has changed is the coffee!

Ella and I still enjoy our weekly visits to Peet's coffee shop, where she does her homeschooling work & I do my writing. We love the people and the ambiance at our local Peet's.

Even Ella thinks they have the best hot cocoa in Orange County!

I will forever be a Peet's Coffee lover! Thanks Peet's for making such great coffee! You can see my first article on why we made the switch the Peet's here!

I was compensated for this post as part of a social shopper insights study with Collective Bias. All my photos, thoughts and opinions are of my own.

Tips for fun and creative video this Halloween!

It’s that time of year again, when our little ghouls, goblins, vampires, pirates and princesses take to the neighborhood in search of pounds of candy! If you’re like other parents, you’re quick with your camera to snap still photos of your trick-or-treaters all dressed up, but why not turn to video this year for a little more creative twist?

Try this -- get your children to act out their character or whatever they’re dressed as this year, and record some quick 30-60 second video clips. You’ll be amazed at what they do and just how creative their little minds can be!

Here are some easy to follow tips that you can use to capture this great video, all with just using your smartphone:

1. Smudges aren’t fun
Since you’re always holding your smartphone in your hand and putting it up to your ear, it’s natural that its lens will have smudges. A quick wipe with a soft cloth before you start to record is the first step you should take. This will give you the clearest shot possible.

2. Think “H” for Halloween and for horizontal!
Be aware of which way you’re holding your smartphone! It may feel natural to hold it vertically and then press record; however, that will give you a video that’s vertical when viewing. Your best bet is to hold your smartphone horizontally. This will allow you to fully enjoy your final product on a widescreen HDTV or computer.

3. Stay just off center!
If you’re lining up your child right in the middle of the shot, STOP! Instead, place them just off center. This is an easy trick that will add an interesting feel and context to your video and really capture your viewers’ attention and keep it on your trick-or-treater!

4. Shake no more!
A shaky video can be just as scary as your kids’ costumes! No one wants to watch a shaky video, so keep the following in mind when you’re about to hit record: hold with both hands and spread your pinkies; take a nice wide stance and spread your feet apart; brace your elbows against your chest for added support; or lean against a surface, such as a wall or tree, to steady yourself.

5. Let’s hear them
Your friends and family want to hear your little ones give their best rendition of a pirate or ghost, so keep in mind how far you are from your subject when recording. The mics found in today’s smartphones aren’t the most sensitive, so try to be as close to your kids as possible to ensure you pick up their voices – being in a quiet environment helps too!

6. Share and scare!
Once you’re happy with the video you’ve captured, take advantage of free software, such as Vimeo’s free iPhone app, which you can use to quickly edit, trim and add effects. You can then share and scare with your friends and family by uploading safely and securely to Vimeo - all without having to go to the computer!

German Anyone?

While Ella is busy running around the house speaking Italian, Andrew is speaking German. My house sounds like an International airport with all the languages being spoken. I am about ready to start checking passports before they come into the house.

Andrew started making videos to practice his German. He made two videos for you to enjoy

Learning German: Alphabet

Learning German:

Tyler's Smokin' Bus

What is the best thing you could purchase for a boy who loves Hot Wheels? A custom made car with their name and photo on it! Tyler was born loving cars (just like his Dad) and has more hot wheel cars than any other toy. With his 5th birthday happening this month I made a custom Hot Wheels car online with him for his present.

The steps are super easy. In less than 10 minutes, Tyler and I had custom made his very own "Smokin' Bus". You can even pick a custom package to have the car sent to you! The shipping and processing time does take almost a month, so make sure and order early.

The final product is the coolest thing we have ever seen! Tyler loves his new Hot Wheels Bus, and plays with it everyday. You can select the type of car, photo and name you want custom printed on the car. Use your imagination and have fun with the new Custom Hot Wheels website!

We were provided with a gift code to order our own custom hot wheels car. All our photos, thoughts and opinions are of our own.

Wordless Wednesday: Look at the World in a New Light

Take the Scare Out of Halloween Planning

Safeway’s design expert, Debi Lilly, has the secret to the best Halloween party!

First Stop, Décor

1. Perfect for DIY Décor: Combine a high-style artisan look with Safeway treats by filling Debi Lilly Design Illusion Vases with Halloween colored candies and a Debi Lilly Design Pumpkin Spice Scented Pillar Candle. Top the piece with your choice of themed masks, for a "pull apart" interactive, and edible, centerpiece.

2. Instant Centerpiece Style: A great center, mantle or "porch piece" can be created simply by dropping a layer of colored Halloween candy into the vase (as a "base") and topping it with a miniature pumpkin, carved or plain.

Second, Set the Bar

3. Crafty Cocktails: Specialty cocktails, or mocktails for the wee guests, are always a party starter. A spiced cider bar turns into a fun DIY self serve station: mix spiced cider with cinnamon sticks, donut-hole stir sticks, dried fruit mix-ins and more.
Time to Eat

4. Eye-popping, Room Temperature Buffet Menu: This can be prepared hours before the party starts allowing you to mix and mingle with all of your guests when they arrive. If you are having fun, so are your guests! Pull a big platter or plate from your pantry and add Safeway veggies – baby carrots, sliced zucchini, and yogurt dip to create an effortless and healthy vegetable pumpkin your guests will enjoy.

5. Edible Kids Crafts: Round up the kids, and have a hands-on afternoon cutting construction paper bats for cupcake toppers. Place them on a cake stand (which can be created by placing a plate on top of a glass Debi Lilly Design Illusion Vase) for an instant stand to adorn the center of your buffet or dining table for an edible centerpiece.

6. Kids Dessert Creations: Candy corn mini trifles are as easy to make as pie! In juice glasses, or canning jars, layer Safeway organic vanilla yogurt (tinted yellow and orange with food coloring), and top with a third layer of Safeway plain yogurt; add a tiny candy corn, tie-up with Debi Lilly Design Satin Ribbon, and watch the kids gobble them down.

7. "Hoot" Owl Cookies: These use just three ingredients! Combine peanut butter cookie dough with M&M's and raw almonds; roll cookie dough into a log, then slice into rounds. Place on a cookie sheet and with a fork press the feathered chin, and bake according to directions. Once removed from the oven, quickly place M&M's and an almond on the cookie to create the perfect owl eyes and nose.

Crafts for All

8. A Spooky Splash of Décor: Round up the backyard leaves (or neighborhood leaves, if you are a city dweller), and make sure to look for spooky shapes. Brush your selected spooky leaves with white paint, draw in eyes and a nose with a sharpie pen…and Boo!…instant ghastly ghosts you can hang anywhere.

9. Pop This Recipe Right Up: At Safeway, we've learned that popcorn balls are always a crowd favorite, and the best part is only four ingredients are needed in this easy recipe. Have fun with family and guests at the craft table over melted butter and marshmallows, popcorn and protein-packed trail mix. Melt the butter and marshmallows, pop your popcorn and mix it with your Safeway trail mix. Work the two mixtures together to create the perfect, fall-festive popcorn balls!

10. A Spooky-Chic Creation: To create spooky-chic vases print holiday words or images onto cardstock, or have kids handwrite them on index cards. Place your spooky words into Debi Lilly Design Illusion Vases, with a layer of colorful candy to act as a weight at the bottom of each vase. Three steps and spooky-chic is achieved!

Unique Holiday Gift Idea

The holidays are slowly sneaking up on us, and so is the need to find that perfect gift. Erin Condren has some great unique holiday gift ideas, for that "hard to shop for" person.

I have an Erin Condren planner that I have been using this year, and I love it. A great planner is important with three young kids, a full-time job and a household to run. I take my Erin Condren planner with me everywhere, and I continually get a lot of compliments on it.

The planner is so lively and colorful, fitting my personality perfectly.

I recently learned that Erin Condren has much more than just planners. They have cool labels, ipad covers, wine bottle labels, invitations, photos on canvas and so much more! Erin Condren is having a great upcoming plum deal on Plum District! For a limited time from 10/24-10/30 you can purchase a $50 gift voucher for only $25!! This would make a huge savings for your holiday shopping. Happy shopping and saving!

I was provided with a plum deal. All my photos, thoughts and opinions are of my own.

It's a lot like being a Pumpkin

A lady had recently been baptized. When she went to work, one of her co-workers asked her what is was like to be a Christian. She was caught off guard and didn't really know how to answer. But, when she looked up, she saw a jack-o-lantern on the desk and she answered:

"Well, it's a lot like being a pumpkin."

"God picks you from the patch and brings you in. He washes off all the dirt on the outside that you got from being around other pumpkins. God removes all that yucky stuff from the inside. He removes all those seeds of doubt, hate and greed. You feel really great. He carves you a new, smiling face and then He puts His light inside you to shine for all to see."

How do you celebrate?

In our house, Halloween is not all about candy, it's about having fun! We love to do crafts, dress-up and decorate our house. I like to keep the focus of holidays away from loading my kids with sugar, and focus on creating special memories together. We always spend the entire first weekend of October decorating our house. We all do it together as a family, carefully deciding where to place our decorations. We always end the day cooking dinner together, and telling stories together by the fire pit on the porch. My kids are still talking about the day we spent decorating for Halloween together.

This year we got some new Halloween decorations, since our giant light-up spider web did not work anymore. We got a very fun dancing mummy that sings, "Thriller." We also got a fun light-up skeleton in the window.

How do you celebrate?

Ella's Learning Italian

One of the great things about the new charter school that my children are attending, is that they are both learning foreign languages. Andrew is learning German, and Ella is learning Italian.

Last night before Ella went to bed, she said good-night to me in Italian. You can just see how excited she is about this new language in her videos. We are making videos following all her lessons for her to review and practice throughout the week. Feel free to learn along with her too!

~Enjoy!

Let your Freak Flag Fly at Shrek The Musical #ShrekonTour

After Shrek was evicted from the swamp, he made his way to The Segerstrom Center for the Arts, in Costa Mesa. Tickets are still available for purchase online until the cast heads back to Duloc on October 16th.

We have been long time Shrek lovers, and I did not know what to expect before seeing the play. Would the kids stay in their seats? Would it be children friendly?

I brought all three of my children by myself ages 9,7 and 4. When the curtain rose the laughs immediately began. The cast was interactive with the audience, and we spent most of the play laughing, just like we did when we first saw the movie.

The character of Pinocchio is played by Luke Yellin who is from Orange County (born in Newport Beach and raised in Costa Mesa.)

The costumes in the show were amazing! It takes two hours to transform the actor into Shrek for each performance and 45 minutes to turn him back into a human! There are 120 wigs in the show; some are made from human hair, some are synthetic!

Our favorite part of the show was when the dragon came out. The dragon was so realistic, and it fascinated my children. In the show, there are two remote-controlled rats and a fart flower operated by prop people. The life-sized dragon is operated by four puppeteers; one controls the head and eyes, one flaps the wings, one moves the body and one moves the tail.

"Just when ya think life can't get any worse, ya get evicted from the swamp!"

Hurry and purchase your tickets to Shrek the Musical, before it leaves Orange County. Tickets are starting at $20 each.

I Made the Switch to Peet's! #PeetsCoffee #Cbias

I love a good quality cup of coffee. I usually have a cup of coffee when I wake-up in the morning, and one after dinner. I was purchasing Starbucks coffee for years, until a couple of weeks ago. I love having a cup of coffee on my front porch in the morning, with my girlfriend Courtney, who lives across the street. The first time she brought over Peet's I looked at her pretty funny. She insisted that I give it a try, and with it being the only coffee we had, I easily gave into peer pressure. I took one sip, and I immediately noticed a huge difference in the flavor. After that I was hooked!

Any coffee place can make a fancy cup of coffee or latte, however not many places make a great cup of regular coffee. Peet's makes the best cup of coffee I have ever had. I have been buying their whole beans and tea directly from the store, until I recently learned that they sell it right in my regular grocery store.

Since Steve's office is drinking Foldger's Coffee (no comment), I decided to get a bunch of Peet's to send with him to work. I can't wait to hear what the people in his office think of the new coffee! Plus, I was able to save $3 using the coupon I got from their website

When I got home, I ground up some of my favorite Peet's Coffee beans, and made myself a delicious black cup of coffee. After grinding and brewing the beans, the entire house smelled of flavorful coffee. It is my favorite scent to wake my husband up to every morning. Every morning, I have him come down for a fresh cup of coffee, and a homemade breakfast just waiting for him to enjoy.

You can still find Ella and I hanging out at the Peet's, at least twice a week, after we drop Tyler off at school. I do a lot of my writing there, while she does her school work. It is also the favorite hangout for one of the desperate housewives of OC. (We all know those girls only go to the best places in OC)

If you like tea, Peet's also has a killer selection of teas in their stores.

I was compensated for this post as part of a social shopper insights study with #Collectivebias. All my photos, thoughts, opinions and love for good coffee are my own.
