Our house has been taken over by the stomach flu this past week, and disinfecting has been my #1 priority in preventing the flu from spreading to my other children. Since I have a son with severe allergies, using harmful cleaning chemicals can cause his asthma to act-up, and he gets major skin irritations from touching counters that have been cleaned with traditional cleaning products.
Every since my son developed allergies I learned that more than just food can cause him to have reactions. I have to be cautious of the types of skin care products he uses and cleaning products that are used in my home. I learned that Vinegar is a natural cleaning source that does not affect his allergies, and can clean the house naturally while helping to save our environment.
Since the kids and I have been taking turns getting sick this week, I found out that I was all out of cleaning solution, so we went to Walmart to purchase more supplies this weekend. You can see more from our shopping trip in my Google Plus photo album.
I use oranges that are grown in my backyard, to create a solution that I use for many different things in my house. I call it an Orange Peel Cleaning Solution. First I grate the rind from one orange.
Then I add the rind into a glass jar.
Next I will add Heinz Cleaning Vinegar and then seal the jar. I will let the solution sit for about one week before using in my household. The orange will give the cleaning solution a pleasant citrus scent in the home.
How do I use it? For many things!
- I will pour a small amount of the solution into the garbage disposer to help deodorize the kitchen.
- I will add 1 part of the solution to 1 part water into a spray bottle to use as an all-purpose cleaner in the household. I use that to clean the bathrooms and kitchen.
The most valuable thing I like to do with it is share with my friends. I feel it is important for other Moms to use natural cleaning products in their homes, so I give my cleaning solution as gifts whenever I get a chance. Once other moms learn that it cleans just as well as chemical products without the chemical they often start using it in their homes too.
One last tip that I have to share is in the laundry room. With three active boys I often use the plain Heinz Cleaning Vinegar (without the orange peel) to fight tough stains. I just add a small amount to the stain. Then rub it in with a clean toothbrush before tossing it into the wash.
